The claims were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austenhays.co.uk\/insight\/news\/austen-hays-serves-collective-action-on-grindr-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">brought<\/a> on behalf of more than 10,000 clients.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ix?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/0001820144\/000182014426000027\/grnd-20260902.htm\" target=\"_blank\">filing<\/a> with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on September 2, 2026, the California-based company said it settled the suit related to historical data practices before 2020, when it was managed by Kunlun. The Chinese gaming company sold the online platform to an investor group called San Vicente Acquisition LLC in May 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThe settlement includes no findings or admission of liability,\u00bb read the filing. \u00abWhile Grindr disputes the allegations, it recognizes and acknowledges the distress and loss of trust expressed by some of its U.K. users regarding that pre-2020 period.\u00bb<\/p>\n<div class=\"dog_two clear\">\n<div class=\"cf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehackernews.uk\/trust-world-update-d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" alt=\"Cybersecurity\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhYq3TvePXpW0JIC7fXyv7A1W8KQqmb-AZqza2EuPyT0k8Nm5CwHYHISFLKXSKIAyR8JRtqEFQ4zx5jADiAkZKQ08nRWG1jCRV5YAbhKua7WaDdH1L6wsI-xOkoV4brlMfK44UwU-4Q1xqWg0uNN7sZkMCzci4RXYgWMNPHTtuKua7OR4oCbmxE10u0yKnR\/s728-nu-rw-lo-l85-e365\/tl-d.jpg\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company also said it has since revamped its privacy program as of 2020 and emphasized that the platform \u00abremains a safe space for users,\u00bb while committing to transparency, user control, and responsible data practices.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the settlement, Grindr has agreed to pay \u00a313 million to the counterparties by December 31, 2026, and a further \u00a313 million by March 31, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>It all goes back to April 2018, when a Norwegian non-profit research group SINTEF <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/SINTEF-9012\/grindr-privacy-leaks\" target=\"_blank\">uncovered<\/a> that Grindr was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/azeenghorayshi\/grindr-hiv-status-privacy#.hfMZPpRAND\" target=\"_blank\">sharing<\/a> users&#8217; HIV status and last tested date with two companies, Apptimize and Localytics, enlisted to optimize its apps. Soon after, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2018\/04\/02\/exclusive-grindr-security-chief-on-hiv-disclosure\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> it would halt the data sharing practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abGrindr has never sold, nor will we ever sell, personal user information \u2013 especially information regarding HIV status or last test date \u2013 to third parties or advertisers,\u00bb Grindr <a href=\"https:\/\/grindr.tumblr.com\/post\/172528912083\/heres-what-you-should-know-regarding-your-hiv\" target=\"_blank\">insisted<\/a> at the time. \u00abNo advertisers have ever had access to HIV status or last test date, unless they viewed it in your public profile. The HIV status and last test date information was used by Apptimize and Localytics only to provide services to Grindr.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>In January 2021, Norway&#8217;s data protection authority fined Grindr \u00a38.6 million (later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-59651703\" target=\"_blank\">reduced to \u00a35.5 million<\/a>) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbrukerradet.no\/side\/grindr-is-made-to-pay-after-a-complaint-from-the-norwegian-consumer-council\/\" target=\"_blank\">violating<\/a> the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by sharing personal data, such as location, sexual orientation, and mental health details, with advertisers.
