{"id":1037,"date":"2026-05-25T10:52:53","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T10:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedigitalfortress.us\/?p=1037"},"modified":"2026-05-25T10:52:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T10:52:53","slug":"lazarus-deploys-remotepe-memory-only-rat-against-financial-and-crypto-firms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedigitalfortress.us\/?p=1037","title":{"rendered":"Lazarus Deploys RemotePE Memory-Only RAT Against Financial and Crypto Firms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span class=\"p-author\"><i class=\"icon-font icon-user\">\ue804<\/i><span class=\"author\">Ravie Lakshmanan<\/span><i class=\"icon-font icon-calendar\">\ue802<\/i><span class=\"author\">May 25, 2026<\/span><\/span><span class=\"p-tags\">Endpoint Security \/ Threat Intelligence<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"articlebody\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEinuOeS1qVC0UHhPnJ0jlSdfScsZDRtkI6VU366iePjKdNTqLiqHcqjRcGL-sNBdUkShUH71YDDVwavzXM1cIu2UU9zE8VYgbJYsRUQeWRZAO75JC2vQHYs4saWOM3rQZKFPqNvlL8ASBocRiZXdO1jLgqLuCCeLHX0bAA1EQEhiBAq3i3Os97qHt_xF5ub\/s1700-e365\/crypto-firms.jpg\" style=\"display: block;  text-align: center; clear: left; float: left;\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on a cross-platform malware called <b>RemotePE<\/b> that has been put to use by the North Korea-linked Lazarus Group in attacks targeting financial and cryptocurrency organizations.<\/p>\n<p>RemotePE, per NCC Group subsidiary Fox-IT, is part of a multi-stage attack chain that involves two loaders tracked as DPAPILoader and RemotePELoader.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abDPAPILoader decrypts and loads RemotePELoader from disk using the Windows Data Protection API (<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/dotnet\/standard\/security\/how-to-use-data-protection\">DPAPI<\/a>),\u00bb security researchers Yun Zheng Hu and Mick Koomen <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.fox-it.com\/2026\/05\/22\/remotepe-the-lazarus-rat-that-lives-in-memory\/\">said<\/a>. \u00abRemotePELoader beacons to a C2 server and waits until it receives the next stage: RemotePE, a RAT executed entirely in memory and never written to disk, leaving no filesystem artifacts.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>RemotePE was first highlighted by the security vendor in September 2025 in connection with an attack targeting an unnamed organization in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, leading to the deployment of three malware families, including PondRAT, ThemeForestRAT, and RemotePE.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dog_two clear\">\n<div class=\"cf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehackernews.uk\/threatlabz-vpn-risk-2026-d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" alt=\"Cybersecurity\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhnNON5UeWywT7OcPNw7V4L7QNWnCnm7Xl_99Y9ek8dL-gRwx-bWxQM1TKqt8deqqrdpUyKMuuijAWyyPQVB0s0qf8ntQ6ldFAJLru-QUWhddKTopc7SeNbBBnd-TsfFyRPP-AAyDuclLlL6XHK4_LXqDC_7eyaz9pzToYr7U543MhrJ7qcK-89sVWHTQUZ\/s728-e100\/zz-2-d.jpg\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The intrusion commenced with the compromise of an employee&#8217;s device through social engineering, after having approached the victim on Telegram under the guise of an existing employee of a trading company and scheduling a meeting on fake Calendly and Picktime domains.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"more\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The RemotePE infection sequence goes through three stages, with the DPAPILoader DLL (\u00abIassvc.dll\u00bb) responsible for decrypting and loading an encrypted payload from disk using DPAPI. The earliest DPAPILoader artifact dates back to November 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The decrypted payload is another loader, RemotePELoader, which is designed to contact a remote server (\u00abaes-secure[.]net\u00bb) over HTTP, fetch the core module, and execute it in memory, but not before taking steps to evade detection using techniques like <a href=\"https:\/\/redops.at\/en\/blog\/exploring-hells-gate\">Hell&#8217;s Gate<\/a> and patching Event Tracing for Windows (<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-hardware\/test\/wpt\/event-tracing-for-windows\">ETW<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhqmMPxISomwXcWytlbLezGrDEPALs6lQmO8iYfcr6KWOszZfpCH0K_u8-fKXBjLoGZvoBMZdyX43rhktIzwhGz9QQikxg4931vGOsqE7H_oduwQrwRzQzjF3pN1A2VMs9TnR8X4wDWjZOdoWlmbvmLRTHft5XEbauPFcAu-M1RgQ3ut55KCDHmNkLI-GDO\/s1700-e365\/stage.png\" style=\"display: block;  text-align: center; clear: left; float: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhqmMPxISomwXcWytlbLezGrDEPALs6lQmO8iYfcr6KWOszZfpCH0K_u8-fKXBjLoGZvoBMZdyX43rhktIzwhGz9QQikxg4931vGOsqE7H_oduwQrwRzQzjF3pN1A2VMs9TnR8X4wDWjZOdoWlmbvmLRTHft5XEbauPFcAu-M1RgQ3ut55KCDHmNkLI-GDO\/s1700-e365\/stage.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1180\" data-original-width=\"1798\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The final stage is a full-fledged remote access trojan named RemotePE that&#8217;s written in C++ and polls a command-and-control (C2) server for further instructions. The malware supports six categories of commands, allowing it to &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Obtain or modify the C2 configuration<\/li>\n<li>Get or change the current working directory, register a new DLL module, get loaded DLLs, and unload a DLL<\/li>\n<li>Perform file operations<\/li>\n<li>Get a list of running processes, create a new process, or kill process by ID<\/li>\n<li>Sleep for a predetermined interval or exit RemotePE<\/li>\n<li>Ping the server<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A notable aspect of the file deletion command is that it overwrites each file with constant bytes seven times before renaming and deleting it, a pattern also observed in PondRAT and POOLRAT (aka SIMPLESEA). PondRAT is assessed to be a lightweight version of POOLRAT.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dog_two clear\">\n<div class=\"cf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehackernews.uk\/ai-cant-stop-d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener sponsored\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" alt=\"Cybersecurity\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjPEV6-530TOlxG6PjrmdlY623wpBwduZ7t1HV6flcmO5R4q4AmfixDUzW0CrhlvMVNWbhvOIso-UDNTka4W_W9Chrdj_dglwBZwi7DuePM2IMIl-hfUYVIqBXgfpr_2619K8Gptb4LzwJ6gUbi7lWl2M8AFQJsHEaw63Q7tZ6708YGruiHrr0Y2W9YYxLQ\/s728-e100\/ThreatLocker-d.png\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fox-IT said it obtained four RemotePE samples that indicate the RAT was under active development between mid-2023 and mid-2024.
